U12 Hurling Boys

The U12 hurlers made a winning start to the league when they travelled to Pallaskenry on Wednesday night. The strength of the Monaleen players was the telling factor in a game played in pouring rain. Daniel Power and Daniel Enright were solid in defence and Mark O'Mara worked hard at full-forward. We had two goals each from Darragh Murphy and Sean Fitzpatrick and one from Jamie Power and there were other good performances from Alan Nicholas, Domhnall Dooley and Darragh Neville. Final score Monaleen 5-1, Pallaskenry 1-0

Monaleen U12 Girls Football

This week Monaleen were narrowly defeated in their match against Shamrock Gaels, at Banogue on Weds 6th May. Both teams gave great performances despite dreadful weather conditions. Shamrock Gaels were the stronger in the early stages, great defensive work by Lauren O Dell and Emma Haugh and Rebekah Fine in goal kept them scoreless. Some late scores before half-time folowed by a score early in the second half meant Shamrock Gaels had, what appeared to be, an unbeatable lead 3.1 to no score. Monaleen fought hard to get back into the game, shots from Robyn Gleeson, Sarah Shortt and Megan O Mara bringing out some excellent goalkeeping. Megan finally made the breakthrough getting a goal and a point which was the start of a great comeback. This was soon followed by a point by Sarah Geraghty and a great shot from Sarah Short which was deflected over the bar. Claire Kelly then shot from long range which was deflected past the goalkeeper to leave only a point between the teams. The last 5 minutes were very exciting with great performances from Caoimhe Lyons, Jane Clohessy and Aoife Dooley kept the pressure on, but Shamrock Gaels were resolute in defense and kept Monaleen out. The final score was 3.1 to 2.3, great credit to both teams for serving up a fine display in very difficult conditions.

The Monaleen team was Rebecca Fine, Laura Phelan, Lauren O Dell, Emma Campbell, Robyn Gleeson, Claire Kelly, Sarah Shortt, Aisling Doyle, Caroline Leahy, Susan Fullen, Caoimhe Lyons, Aoife Dooley, Emma Haugh, Megan O Meara, Sarah Quinlan, Clodagh Murphy, Sarah Geraghty, Emma Campbell, Niamh Mulhall, Sarah O Donnell, Megan O Hehir and Caoimhe O Dwyer

U12 Camogie

Monaleen had another good win this week in the Under 12 camogie league, this time against Treaty Gaels on Thursday 7th May. The first half was played in very wet conditions, but both teams played with great determination and skill. After a long spell of pressure Caoimhe Lyons finally made the breakthrough with a goal and a point. This was soon followed by scores from Laura Phelan and Caroline Crotty to give Monaleen a good lead at half time 3.1 to no score. In the second half a great effort by Treaty Gaels kept the Monaleen defence busy with Amy Collopy, Sinead O Hanrahan, Emear Nelson and Nicole Sheehan putting in strong performances to keep them out. Ciara Wiley was dominant in midfield with some great ground strokes into the forwards where Jane Stundon , Christine Costelloe and Laura Griffin played really well. Cliodhna McCarthy and Caoimhe Lyons added two late scores to leave Monaleen eventual winners by 5.1 to no score.

U6/7 Hurling

A hearty thanks to Ahane’s juvenile hurlers and coaches who visited our club last Friday evening to compete in friendly challenge games with our U6/7/8 boys. Some excellent Go Games format hurling was played by all. Starring for Monaleen’s U6/7 teams were Conor Carew, Conor Yelverton, David Mullowney, Donnacha O’Dalaigh, Eoin O Driscoll, Eoin O’Sullivan, Liam Dillon, Nicky O’Dwyer, Paul Brennan, Ryan Power, Tomas Muzychka, Conor Donohoe, David O’Flaherty, Declan Aylward, Eoghan Burke, Jack Oliver, Ronan Lyons, Rory Collins, Stephen Maloney and John Ryan. There were some fantastic individual displays which bode well for the future. Coaches encourage young players to practice hurling at home and ask parents to keep a close eye on essentials including the grip (“strong hand on top”). Normal training resumes next Friday May 15th while our next game will be away to Ballybricken on May 22nd. Well done to all.

Under 8's : Monaleen v Ahane 8th May, 2009

The Under 8's of Ahane came to visit us in Monaleen and we had a splendid game. In a high scoring contest, Ahane took an early lead which they were never to let go, although the score was close at all times. Daire Ryan was superb all night with great clearances and high energy levels. Jack Ronan was another star with his great play and Conor Deegan was excellent from start to finish. Caolan Dignam and John Moloney were immense in midfield. It was a game played in a very friendly spirit and with many friendships across the teams, we look forward to more games with Ahane in the future.
