Club NotesApril 5th, 2010Senior FootballOur senior footballers saw a lot of action in the past week with three games, resulting in two successes and a defeat. 2009 All County League Division 1 Semi-FinalMonaleen 5-5 Pallasgreen 1-9Their first competitive game of the series was the 2009 All County League Division 1 semi-final against our east neighbours, Pallasgreen in Pallas. Quite obviously the intense training and games in the George Fitzpatrick Tournament sharpened this panel and saw them win convincingly by 5-5 to 1-9. Led by Limerick panellist, Barry Fitzpatrick at centre back, they countered clinically to provide a harvest of goals and sew up the game well before the end against a side that reached the country championship semi-final in 2009. The scoring came from Muiris Gavin with 1-2, Jason O’Brien with 1-1, and goals form Peter Russell, Micheál Crowley and Brian Argue, while defender Fergus Melody came up to add the remaining point. This means that the long–awaited final will be played on Easter Monday in Ballyagran at 2.00 pm. All County Senior LeagueMonaleen 1-6 St. Patrick's 2-6Unfortunately the senior team had to face atrocious elements in the opening game of this year’s All County Senior League last Tuesday evening against St Patricks in the new field. With incessant rain falling throughout the game, it was a credit to both sides for playing such constructive football and only a score divided the sides with St Patricks winning by 2-6 to 1-6. The Monaleen scorers on the night were Jason O’Brien, who bagged a goal and 2 points, while Muiris Gavin had the remaining 4 points. Cian Hickey deserves a mention for his fine all-round contribution on the night. City Senior ChampionshipMonaleen beat MungretThe third game for the senior team within the space of 8 days had them face Mungret in the City Senior Championship on the all-weather LIT pitch on Thursday evening. Again this was a superb team performance with both sides playing good open and fast football. Monaleen’s defence more than neutralised the persistent flair of the opposition with excellent performances from Peter King at full back, Darren Burke in the corner and Fergus Melody in the other corner, When Jason O’Brien netted the only goal of the game mid-way in the second half the tide turned deservedly for Monaleen; again Muiris Gavin’s unerring point- taking turned a game into a deserved victory and a semi-final clash with St Patricks at the end of April. The team lined out as follows: Alan Kitson, Darren Burke, Peter King, Fergus Melody, Jason O’Brien, Finbar Nash, Jack Hoare, Michael Crowley, Shane Leonard, Eoin Keating, Brian Geary, Shane Dineen, Muiris Gavin, Luke Kavanagh, Padraig Quinn. Subs: Mike Nicholas, Sean Nicholas, Diarmuid Lehane, Gavin Manifold, Seamus Keogh.
