Junior A Football : City League Champions

Monaleen 4-12 Na Piarsaigh 2-5

On Friday evening last our Junior A footballers brought home the first silverware of the adult scene with a resounding win over a spirited Na Piarsaigh side in Mungret. Ross O’Neill accepted the Leo Morrison Cup following a campaign which saw them worthy winners of this City League competition having an unbeaten five-match run.

From the third minute when John O’Dwyer had the ball in the back of the net Monaleen were never headed. Points from Shane Dineen, John Paul Stokes and Diamuid McCarthy saw Monaleen lead by 1-6 to 1-2 at the interval. The second half started well for Monaleen with their second goal from Shane Dineen which was followed five minutes later by another from the uncontainable mid-fielder Diarmuid McCarthy. Na Piarsaigh did get their second goal mid- way in the half but it was not enough to contain a dominant Monaleen. Stokes, O’Neill and Dineen completed the point scoring before Diarmuid McCarthy had his second goal near the end. Monaleen had by now ran out convincing winners by 4-12 to 2-5. This outstanding performance could have been achieved without the high fielding of John Bartley at centre-back, and the tenacious play of Ronan Parkes, at full-back while Fergal Lawlor and Brian Collins on the wings drove forward tirelessly. Damien Cosgrave worked like a Trojan at midfield and Cathal Parkes continued to menace the Na Piarsaigh defence with his off the ball running at full forward.

Monaleen lined out as follows: Gavin Manifold, Ger Maughan, Ronan Parkes, Diarmuid Lehane, Fergal Lawlor, John Bartley, Brian Collins, Diarmuid McCarthy (2-1), Damien Cosgrave, Ross O’Neill (0-3), John Paul Stokes (0-3), John O’Dwyer (1-1), Podge Pond, Cathal Parkes, Shane Dineen(1-4). Subs used: David Hogan, Mike O’Doherty, Darragh Connolly, Michael Nicholas, David Birmingham.
