Club NotesJuly 19th, 2010Intermediate HurlingThe week ended on a high note with our Intermediate hurling team winning a crucial championship tie in Ballyagran on Friday over a defiant Tournafulla side. This earns them a quarter-final tie at the beginning of August having already beaten Ballybricken- Bohermore over whom Group winners Dromin-Athlacca had a comfortable win. In a tentative first half in which they played against the strong breeze, Monaleen were level at the interval courtesy of a fine forward play from Peter Russell who had a goal and three points and Gerry Collins the other three points. A Tournafulla goal midway in the second half saw them drew level with the city side. Monaleens stroke of good fortune came via a goal from John ODwyer. But it was the introduction of Michael Doyle that helped to reverse the green tide and with Peter Russell getting his second goal to cap an outstanding performance the result was never in doubt- the final score being 3-13 to 1-16 . Under 21Our Under-21s bowed out of the championship with fighting performance
against Bruree in the semi-final played in Monaleen. This was their
first reversal in 6 games and while they trailed by four points at the
interval they put in a rousing final ten minutes to come within a score
of earning a replay on the score line of 3-9 to 1-16. Credit is due
to the team mentors, Alan Kitson, Niall Macken and Tom Murphy for bringing
this side to the penultimate stage of the championship which sees Bruree
play Glenroe in the final. Junior B HurlingOur Junior B hurling team had their first win of the City championship
with a credible win over a determined Abbey Sarsfields side. The game
was played in ideal conditions and at a fast pace between the showers
on Sunday morning. Credit is due to Paul Coleman at full back and Leo
Morrison at full forward for continuing to contribute significantly
to the 3-11 to 2-5 victory. Julian Burke had an outstanding game at
centre-back while the goals came from Donal Madden, Liam Griffin and
Robbie McNamara. This teams next game is an away game against
Mungret on Sunday next. Their first game in the championship was against
Kildimo where they came up short on the score of 1-12 to 1-11.
